On Sunday November 30th at 1702 hours, The Rye Fire Department was dispatched to a heavy odor of gasoline in the area of Greenhaven Rd and Rye Rd. Upon arrival, firefighters found a heavy odor of gasoline coming from the sewer system and storm drains. Rye firefighters then requested additional help from Rye DPW and Westchester County Department of Emergency Service Special Operations Division (WCDES-SOD) to help locate the course. The scene grew larger as gasoline odors were found to be coming from many manholes across southern Greenhaven. Using WCDES-SOD HAZMAT team equipment, readings were taken and found to be above normal. In fact, one manhole topped out at 3400ppm. The source of the leak was not found. With the permission of The New York State’s Department of Environmental Conservation, we were able to flush out the storm drains and sewer lines. After approx. 45 minutes of flushing, the odor had dissipated and units returned to service at 2010 hours.
