| At 1812 hours on Thursday December 1 the Rye Fire Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident with reported injuries on Interstate 95 Northbound in the area of mile marker 12.5 (Playland Parkway Overpass.) While en route, 60 Control (Dispatch) notified responding units that extrication would be needed. Upon arrival, Rye firefighters found an Acura sedan that had apparently spun out, causing the passenger side to strike the center divider of the highway with great force before the vehicle turned another 180 degrees, finally coming to rest with the driver side against the divider, approximately 50 yards North of the Playland Parkway bridge. Full airbag deployment, including the side curtains, had occurred. Rye members promptly engaged the Holmatro hydraulic rescue tools from Engine 191 and effected the removal of both doors and the B pillar from the passenger side of the vehicle, while Medics stabilized the injured driver, who was the only occupant. Once access was gained, the patient was soon transferred to the waiting ambulance and transported by Port Chester*Rye*Rye Brook EMS. Rye units applied absorbent to the area under the radiator of the badly damaged vehicle to soak up leaking engine coolant before a flatbed from Vincent Service Station arrived to remove the vehicle. All Rye units went back in service around 1915. The Harrison FD stood by in their own quarters during this incident- ready to respond to any other alarms that might have come in for the City of Rye. |
