| On Monday June 6th, while responding to a commercial alarm at the DPW facility, Rye was dispatched to a second call in district for a transformer fire in the area of Stuyvesant Ave and Van Wagenen Ave. Con Edison was already on scene prior to RFD arrival. RFD units and Con Ed made quick work of the small fire, however a resulting outage affected a majority of the Milton Point area. At the peak of the incident, Con Ed reported 392 customers affected. Roads to Milton Point were closed to allow Con Ed to fix the problem. RFD was on hand to assist Con Ed and assist in traffic control and also responded to other calls during this time span for downed wire reports.
The Rye Fire Department wants everyone to know that coming in contact with a live wire can cause current to flow through the body, resulting in electrical shock and burns. Serious injury or even death can also occur. This is why we ask people not to touch a wire whether you think it is live or not. If you want to report a downed wire, we suggest calling the Rye Police Department at 914-967-1234. If the wire is sparking or on fire, call 911. |
