On Saturday, November 17, members of the Rye FD attended American Red Cross "CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer" course, taught by Milton Point Engine and Hose Lieutenant John Cotter. Specifics covered in the class included response tactics for breathing, cardiac emergencies in adults, children, and infants as well as how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) in the case of cardiac arrest. Firefighters were also trained in proper use of personal protective equipment to stop blood-borne pathogens and other diseases from spreading. Each firefighter was issued a pocket mask and carrying case.
This training is vital due to the inherent health risks at the scene of a fire, motor vehicle accident or other fire/rescue calls. In the coming months, members will also receive OSHA blood-borne pathogen training.
