Around 0115 on Wednesday, October 22 the Rye Fire Department was called to a reported structure fire at 27 Beck Ave. As units were en route, Rye PD units arrived on scene and confirmed a working fire. Arriving Rye Fire units found flames shooting through the roof of a one-and-a-half story wood frame structure that was thought to be occupied by at least four people. The fire building was uniquely situated between two other houses, essentially sandwiched between a structure on Beck Avenue and one on Wainwright Street. The heavy fire conditions led to an immediate call for mutual aid: Harrison sent one engine to the scene, while the Village of Mamaroneck sent an engine and a ladder. The Town of Mamaroneck F.A.S.Team also responded. Most of the visible fire was knocked down by 0200, through the use of multiple hand-lines and two aerial master streams. Searches for victims were thankfully negative and there was no extension to surrounding houses. The fire was deemed to be electrical in origin. All fire units cleared the scene by 0515, although Rye firefighters returned at around 0700 to extinguish some smoldering wood panels around the chimney. An Engine from the Purchase Fire Department also covered the City of Rye during the fire. Photos by Rich Suarino (Ex-Captain, PH&L)
