At 2134 hours on Monday February 23 2009, the City of Rye Fire Department was dispatched to an activated residential fire alarm at 949 Forest Avenue. E191, E192 and Ladder 25 initially responded, along with Car 2421, Car 2423 and several volunteer members. E192 was first to arrive and found smoke showing from a two-and-a-half story wood-frame private dwelling at the end of a long shared driveway. L25 positioned for aerial operation, while E191 laid in with 800 feet of 5 inch large diameter hose from the hydrant in front of 941 Forest Ave. Car 2421 transmitted a working fire, which brought Car 2422, Utility 39 and more volunteer manpower to the scene, along with putting units from neighboring departments on stand-by to cover any additional calls in the City of Rye.
Over the course of the fire, units and manpower from the Harrison, Port Chester, Village of Mamaroneck and Town of Mamaroneck Fire Departments responded to the scene or provided coverage for the City of Rye. Additional help was provided by the Rye PD, Port Chester*Rye*Rye Brook EMS, Con Ed and the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services.
All personnel worked hard, in freezing conditions, to extinguish the blaze which was ultimately brought under control through the use of multiple hose lines and properly implemented ventilation techniques.
While the house did sustain serious damage, no one was home at the time of the fire. All emergency personnel returned home safely, and the incident was officially terminated shortly after 0300 on the morning of Tuesday February 24.
